Keyword research to find buyer keywords

What are Buyer keywords

Buyer keywords are those specific keywords that indicate a certain level of “purchasing” intent. So here is an example

  • cheap hosting for a blog
  • iphone 6 review

Those 2 keywords indicates that the person searching, is actually interested in buying something.

Why do you need buyer keywords ?

If you are selling something as an affiliate or your own product, you need sales. To get sales you need the right kind of traffic that will buy.

Lets say you have an amazon affiliate site that sells “ice cream maker”. So you would write posts to generate some traffic around “ice cream makers”. Now what kind of keywords you target in the posts would determine what kind of traffic will land on the site.

Consider the following 2 keyword phrases –

1. what is an ice cream maker – The user is interested in knowing what an ice cream maker is and what he can do with it. No doubt its a good topic/keyword to write a blog post but it does not have a strong indication whether the user is interested in buying an ice cream maker using your affiliate link.

2. best ice cream maker under $100 – The user is probably looking to buy an ice cream maker that costs less than $100. So if you have a blog post listing 10 such products then the chances of making a sale is higher.

Buyer keyword patterns

Getting buyer keywords in any niche is not that difficult. Buyer keywords are found to have a certain pattern. To get buyer keywords you need to generate keyword ideas around these patterns.

So lets say you have a certain PRODUCT named MODEL of a brand called BRAND.

  • PRODUCT/MODEL reviews (iphone 6 reviews)
  • buy MODEL (buy an iphone 6)
  • purchase MODEL
  • premium PRODUCT for * (premium iphone accessories for *)
  • best PRODUCT for * (best laptop for students)
  • best PRODUCT in 2015
  • top PRODUCT for *
  • best PRODUCT under * (best laptop under $500)
  • cheap PRODUCT/MODEL
  • cheap PRODUCT/MODEL for *
  • PRODUCT/MODEL for cheap
  • low cost PRODUCT/MODEL
  • lowest price for PRODUCT/MODEL
  • best PRODUCT deals
  • best MODEL deals
  • best MODEL deals 2015
  • PRODUCT/MODEL coupon codes
  • PRODUCT/MODEL discount coupons
  • PRODUCT/MODEL promo codes

So using the above given templates you can easily develop buyer keyword ideas around your own product/niche and expand them further using tools.

However, the above is not a universal list of buyer keyword patterns. Each niche also has its own set of keywords that indicate buyer intent. Finding those would require a little analysis to understand what you audience is looking for.

Now lets see how we can use some of the popular keyword tools to find buyer keywords quickly.

Using google keyword planner

Google keyword planner has a feature to specify keywords to include and negative keywords.

Both these fields specify the keywords to include and exclude respectively.

Now here is the trick. Try putting in the following keywords in the Include keywords box –

  • purchase
  • buy
  • discount
  • coupon
  • premium
  • review
  • cost
  • cheap

And specify these as the negative keywords –

  • free

And the results would be a lot more than you would expect. The keywords would be the real buyer keywords, and if you can rank for those, the chances of generating leads and sales would be quite high.

Ubersuggest

Ubersuggest gets you keyword suggestions from google’s keyword suggestion database. And it can get you a lot of buyer keywords.

Just put in the some of the buyer keyword patterns shown above

  • buy PRODUCT
  • best PRODUCT for
  • PRODUCT under

And plenty of ideas should come up. Once you have the suggestions, download them and put them into keyword planner to get the monthly search volumes.

Getting even more buyer keywords

Once you have prepared a list of buyer keywords found at keyword planner and Ubersuggest, you are ready to go and write some content around them.

However if you are interested in doing further research for more keywords, use the related keyword searches from google. These are the keywords that are found at the bottom of google’s search result pages.

These search phrases are very much related to the original search term and are also long tail and have traffic around them.

To scrape the related keywords use SeoStack. It allows you to input a list of keywords and find related keywords for each of them.

More buyer keyword patterns

The above shown examples are buyer keywords that have a direct mention of the product and/or the brand. Such keywords are known to have the highest level of buyer intent. The chances of the user to make a purchase are highest.

However there are many other keyword patterns that have a lower but real buyer intent. Keywords that seek information about the “use” of a product or solution to some problem are quite useful.

For example

1. How to gain weight fast – Now someone who is looking to gain weight fast, might be interested in buying a product that helps to gain weight fast

2. How to play guitar – Sell a book or course that teaches how to play guitar ?

3. How to repair a wooden table – Sell a DIY kit for doing wood work as home ?

Look carefully. The idea is about giving the user, what he is looking for. And the rest is quite simple.

Build proper content around the keywords, promote products and sales should start.

Great article, Silver! There are a couple other buyer keywords I use that I’d add to your list. The first one is “PRODUCT/MODEL on sale” or the similar “PRODUCT/MODEL sale” which indicates the buyer is looking for find the best price to buy now. These tend to have high search volume so there’s quite a bit of competition.
Another one that tends to work as a targeted buyer keyword is “PRODUCT/MODEL Clearance” especially if you have an active discount. Lead these searchers to a page for your product that has a temporary low price with a countdown plugin running and test your conversion rate. If your landing page is decent, you should see quite a conversion!
